Oh, what they did to sacred corn! Genetically-Engineered Corn and Hispanics

Mural in Oaxaxa, Mexico

By Rosa Escondido

It’s disturbing walking through HEB, and seeing overweight Hispanic families attempting to find good food for their families.  It is hopeless because the food has been rigged against them, and more against them than any other segment of the country.

As Hispanics have developed diabetes, the government tells them that they have a genetic predisposition to diabetes which is why they have more than other groups.  Or it tells them that they feed their children poorly, or it tells them they don’t get enough exercise.  What it doesn’t tell them is the truth.

Wall St. dilutes Dodd-Frank: Occupiers should demand food speculation ban

By TRNN

Paul Jay interviews Bob Pollin of the Political Economy Research Institute at UMASS Amherst, who urges the Occupy movement to demand strong speculation reform. Though Dodd-Frank was passed last year, it fails to address the fundamental problems that led to the financial crisis begun in 2008 and continuing today.

On October 18, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) voted 3-2 to “curb banks’ and investment funds’ ability to trade commodities, though the rules were watered down after lobbying by Wall Street,” reports Financial Times. But, advises Pollin, not only will the reforms not be mandated for two more years, the new rules allow exemptions – loopholes, so that banksters can continue to spike food prices for profit.

In another FT article, the original proposal planned to “ensure that market power is not concentrated in any one submarket. Banks said this was crazy.”

Jailbirds add life to UK prison famous for torturing suffragists

By Rady Ananda

The British Hen Welfare Trust re-homed 20 commercial hens at HM Prison Holloway on Oct. 3, as part of the staff’s garden program offering educational and therapeutic projects to its women inmates.  This is a far cry from the days when Holloway imprisoned women for agitating for the right to vote, and then tortured them.

Volunteer re-homer at the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT), Jean Gill, delivered the hens and spoke to prisoners about the work of the charity and advised them on hen care.

“This is a really interesting experiment and a real opportunity from the charity’s point of view,” said Gill in a press release. “It is apt and extraordinary on so many levels that some of the prisoners will be able to take care of something as vulnerable as a battery hen that has had a restricted start in life, that has been kept, literally behind bars in a small cage without access to sunlight or fresh air.”

Is Processed Fast Food Really Food?

By Dr. Mercola
Care.com

McDonald’s is the poster child for the modern Western diet, and I’m pleased that people are finally starting to wake up and ask some questions. Such as: Is processed fast food really food?

I would argue that anything processed to the point of being everlasting is NOT actually food and should not be consumed.

Persistent Organic Pollutants Could Lead to Birth Defects in Half of All Newborns

By Anthony Gucciardi
Activist Post

Scientists have found that the ubiquitous presence of chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) could soon lead to half of all newborn babies being born with at least one birth defect.  POPs include different pesticides, industrial chemicals, and compounds released from burning fossil fuels. A new study links these chemicals to neural tube defects, the first of its kind to examine the effects of such environmental factors on fetal development.

One Source: Codex, Tar Sands, and Vaccines

By David Varner

For those occupying various cities now to protest the bankers, remember that pharma IS the bankers.

“The Rockefellers and I.G. Farben worked together before World War II and during World War II. For all practical purposes, the Rockefellers and I.G. Farben were the Third Reich.”

The Bushes made their money in Nazi German and are tied closely to pharma and the Rockefellers. GW Bush had them as advisors when he pushed through “pandemic” laws in each state that are disguised martial law and would force untested (and unknown) vaccines (as well as unknown, untested drugs, chemicals and “medical” procedure) on the entire country with a mere declaration of an emergency (no proof required).

For those protesting the Tar Sands pipeline now, remember that pharma is the oil companies.

Since BP’s catastrophic Macondo Blowout in the Gulf of Mexico last year, the Obama Administration has granted nearly 300 new drilling permits [1] and shirked plans to plug 3,600 of more than 28,000 abandoned wells, which pose significant threats to the severely damaged sea.

Among those granted new permits for drilling in the Gulf, on Friday Obama granted BP permission to explore for oil in the Gulf, allowing it to bid on new leases that will be sold at auction in December.

Genetically contaminated canola escapes from North Dakota to Manitoba

Canadian Food Inspection Agency sees nothing wrong with escaped genetics

By Margaret Munro
Vancouver Sun

Genetically modified canola has escaped from the farm and is thriving in the wild across North Dakota, according to a study that indicates there are plenty of novel man-made genes crossing the Canada-U.S. border.

GM canola was found growing everywhere from ditches to parking lots, the scientists report, with some of the highest densities along a trucking route into Canada.

Permablitz in Action

A film by Tanya Curnow

EAT THE SUBURBS takes the oil debate from the bowser to the backyard and follows Melbourne’s “permablitzers” as they prepare for the end of the oil age… one garden at a time. A Permablitz is a permaculture based garden makeover where
people come together to share knowledge and skills about food production.

Here is one in Australia, where inspired young people share the intention of weaning themselves fully off of the industrial agricultural system.

Dairy Farmer Michael Schmidt: 3 Weeks on Hunger Strike, Wants Talks With Canadian Premier McGuinty

By Good Food 4 All

Canadians: Contact your officials! (Info below)

Three weeks have passed and Canadian dairy farmer continues his hunger strike for food freedom. He has consumed only water and not even his normal daily glass of milk.  He’s lost about 30 pounds and is starting to look gaunt. He’s admitted that he is getting weaker and has had to stop working.

Mr. Schmidt wants to meet with Canadian Premier Dalton McGuinty to start a dialog on food freedom.  Last week he posted a letter to Mr. Mc Guinty. So far, Mr. McGuinty has ignored all requests to meet with Mr. Schmidt.

Does Michael Schmidt have to die?  He states that he is willing to because he believes in the freedom of food.  Obviously, to the Canadian government he is just a fly in the ointment, a nuisance.

The Farm Bill; Occupy the Land

The anti-democratic ”Super Committee” is about to take a whack at the Farm Bill. Quietly, this is about to be the first big assault to come out of last summer’s bipartisan deficit terrorist kabuki.

The farm bill is loaded with corporate welfare for big farms, has many small programs nominally dedicated to helping small farms, and contains critical conservation and nutrition programs.

Mothers to Protest FDA Criminalizing Raw Milk Nov. 1

MOTHERS TO HOLD DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE FDA

“Don’t Turn Us Into Criminals over Milk!” Demand Moms

A group of mothers from across the country who feed their children raw milk plan to hold a demonstration to protest the FDA’s crackdown on raw milk production and distribution, arguing that the government campaign not only criminalizes raw milk, but criminalizes the American citizens who buy and consume it.

Prior to their peaceful demonstration, a caravan of mothers will cross state lines with raw milk and invite FDA to witness what the agency wrongly considers to be a criminal act.  Media are invited to ride along as embedded reporters to report on how the FDA responds to what it wrongly terms a violation of the law.
