Angelina Jolie: The Mistake that Almost Killed Her

In comments reportedly made during a press briefing for her new movie SALT, Angelina Jolie discussed her bad experiences with a vegan diet.

“I joke that a big juicy steak is my beauty secret,” said Jolie. “But seriously, I love red meat. I was a vegan for a long time, and it nearly killed me. I found I was not getting enough nutrition.”

This is not an uncommon complaint among former vegans; the limitations of the diet require extra diligence to make sure you get proper nutrients.

Any time you make a comment about vegetarianism/veganism, like actress Angelina Jolie’s recent casual remark, you run the risk of ruffling more than a few feathers.

But her experience was loudly echoed in many of the comments that were posted on the China Study rebuttal I posted last week.

There’s tremendous controversy about what type of diet is best – and whether or not you should ever eat meat.

  3. Dear Dr. Mercola,
    Did you throw your medical degree out the window? I believe you said that you earned that degree so that you could scientifically understand the human body. Your article and the test you say determines what type of diet each person should eat are anything but scientific. Most of it seems to rely on the book “Eat Right for Your Blood Type by D’Adano” and one personal experience of yours from using the diet suggested in the book “Fit For Life by H. Diamond”. You say that that diet might have led to your death had you not stopped eating nothing but fruit for breakfast. Did you really feel something or did you base this close call strictly on the test? Millions of people took up eating fruit for breakfast after reading those books Diamond wrote and I never heard of one medical emergency or death due to eating too much fruit. Just the opposite is true everyone in the field of health is saying we need to eat more fruit.

    My opinion of your experience based on my own experience with that diet which is food combining is that your body was experiencing changes because you were for the first time in your life eating properly for a human being. When I used the same diet to fight prostate cancer I noted that there were times when I did not feel so good. I was told that this was my body discharging toxins not the diet killing me. I have started thousands of people eating nothing but fruit for breakfast in the form of a smoothie and I have yet to hear of even one medical emergency or death. Every bit of feed back I get from everyone has been positive about how much energy and how good they feel since they started having nothing but fruit for breakfast.

    We have been so brain washed that we do not no the name that defines our diet type in the animal kingdom, frugivorous. A word so rarely used that if you enter that into a Word Document and you will probably get a misspell. By every scientific measurement this is what we are Dr. Mercola you should have looked this up before you wrote the article.

    For the scientific evidence you should do some reading. If I were you I would start with an article by Art Baker, MA, NHE titled Biological Adaptations on below are two excerpts from his article all backed by scientific references.

    Dr Alan Walker and his associates, anthropologists at John Hopkins University, using the most modern electronic microscopic equipment,state: “Preliminary studies of fossil teeth have led to the startling suggestion that our early human ancestors (Australopithecus) were not predominantly meat-eaters or even eaters of seeds, shoots, leaves or grasses, nor were they omnivorous. Instead they appear to have subsisted chiefly on a diet of fruit. Every tooth examined from the hominids of the 12 million year period leading up to Homo Erectus appeared to be that of a fruit-eater.” – NY Times, May 1979

    A carnivores gastric juice is highly acidic, serving to prevent putrefaction while flesh undergoes digestion. Plant-eaters however, secrete a much less concentrated and less abundant quantity of hydrochloric acid that does not curtail the bacterial decomposition of flesh: a process that begins at the animals moment of death. Flesh is digested in an acid medium within the stomach. Humans secrete a very weak concentration of hydrochloric acid relative to the carnivore, and little of the protein-splitting enzyme pepsinogen. Carnivorous animals have concentrations of these flesh-digesting secretions 1100% greater than do humans. Lions can rip off and swallow your hand whole and quite readily digest it.

    The diet type test that you offer you say is based on the “Blood Type Diet by D’Adano”. That diet has no scientific evidence to back up D’Adamo’s hypotheses and conclusions, it was basically made up by him and many scientists call it “blood type astrology”. Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. of the Mayo Clinic says, “There’s no sound scientific evidence that the so-called blood type diet is any more effective or any more beneficial for weight loss than is any other diet”.

    I have been a food combining vegetarian for 20 years. I beat the cancer I had using this diet, I am 65 now and I have not drawn a sick breath since that time.


  4. Much too much to read and then it won’t change a thing re my vegan lifestyle. For Angeline Jolie I give her credit for any good she does for impoverished children of the world but when it comes to diet – she knows nothing in my opinion. And it would have been better had she said NOTHING in this regard saying that a vegan diet almost killed her. Not only is a vegan diet healthy – people who espouse it have a smaller carbon footprint and if more people would become plant- based eaters our environment would be healthier and there would be enough grain to feed the world. Hear that – Angelina – feed the world. Your meat lifestyle is not promoting this at all.

  5. To Suzana and other close-minded, arrogant vegans:

    It works for you, so it MUST be right for the rest of us, right? What are YOU doing for humanity? Angelina and others are entitled to their “opinions” as well, but THAT is all they are…… opinions! Just like yours, just like mine:

    Anyone can do some “googling” and throw out names of “experts” supporting their “opinion.” For every “expert” on a subject, you will find one or more to counter it with a seemingly logical solution. We, like all creatures, are an adaptive species (shocking, I know). Our bodies even seem to “adapt” to toxic air, toxic water, toxic food, toxic cleaning supplies, etc. (You know, like you are living now). The response isn’t always the same with each individual. Granted, man-made chemical toxins are bad for us and should be avoided at all costs (made illegal, IMHO).

    You can shove all the fruits and veggies you want into your body if you wish, but it does NO GOOD if your fruits and veggies are down-wind from a MONSANTO farm, close to the Gulf of Mexico, near Chernobyl, next to a major road, city, polluted stream, under “acid rain”, etc…… “Locally” grown won’t help much for these people. The BIGGEST polluters on the planet are the worlds governments/military’s – ALL of them, especially the poor ones (exploited by corporate parasites and bankers for their “resources”!). Our “governors” are DESTROYING the planet with LETHAL, HORRIFIC, EVIL toxins like Depleted Uranium and White Phosphorous (used on Arabs/Muslims – to combat “Terrorism”). Add this to MEGA corporations, Pharmaceuticals, Flouride, Mercury, Core-Exit, High-Frequency Radiation, VACCINES (Eugenics), etc…… nauseam.

    To top it all off; the NUMBER THREE (3) cause of death in North America is “death by doctor”…….. look it up! The other TWO are caused by CANCER and HEART DISEASE……….. attributed to what??? Hmmm, let me guess!? So, until “we the people” take back our governments and ban the manufacture and use of toxic chemicals/weapons, we are ALL in the same sinking boat, just rearranging the chairs, and fiddling away to entertain the hysterical masses. Eat, drink, and be merry folks……… no one gets out of here alive!!!

And now we also have to worry about psycho/pseudo scientists and doctors using “nano” particles and even “nano” machines and robots to infiltrate our bodies for “repairs.” Google, MicroLimp, and other scum actually want a digital “human interface” directly to our brains……. no kidding! Well, guess what; Mad Scientists are also carefully examining brain wave frequencies and can actually “read” your mind with a wireless connection……. look it up, it is recent news. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!?

    Yes and I have seen horses eat baby chicks on our farm when I was a kid. And probably if you put a feed bag of baby chicks under the horses nose every day it would eat them too. But it would not be long before the horse was fat and bloated with indigestion, headache’s, autoimmune diseases and arthritis stumbling around the farm passing gas everywhere it went like Angelina and 95% of the American public. The horse would live only half of its life time and die of cancer or a massive coronary somewhere out on the pasture.

    I am just telling the public the truth like the FDA, USDA and HHS should if they weren’t in the pockets of big agriculture the food business, pharmaceutical companies and the AMA. Who make nothing but profit off of feeding us garbage and toxic medications while we get sicker and sicker from doing just what my horse did.

    And of course my being one of those borne again close-minded, arrogant vegans due to discovering what it takes to beat cancer naturally. With out the entire load of BS the AMA wants to torture you with till you are on morphine and kicked out of the hospital so you will die elsewhere. I will keep on telling everyone who has a mind open enough to listen what the truth is. That they need to stop accepting the feedbag full of indigestible crap they are handed because they are considered suckers by those in the government, the AMA and big business and take charge of their life.

  11. Two things you’ve failed to take into account: One, a body’s blood type (serum pH) is the most influential factor in how it tolerates meat intake, and Two, a vegan diet is less likely what “almost killed” Jolie. More likely the rampant substance abuse and obsessive dieting, kiddo.

    Writing an entire article about veganism based solely upon crap you find on Wikipedia and spurred by a flippant remark from a plastic playgirl is hardly medical journalism. But I do see that you’ve managed to get attention with a vapid oral strawberry shot featuring the world famous It Girl from 5 minutes ago.

    Next time just write a movie review and be done with it.

  12. If you want to fool the majority of the population who hesitate to change their diet you have written the perfect article. But for those who want the truth below are just some of the real scientific studies that reflect the truth about vegetarian’s health and life expectancy.

    According to William Castelli, MD, director of the Framingham Heart Study, vegetarians live three to six years longer than meat eaters. He said, “vegetarians have the best diet. They have the lowest rate of coronary disease of any group in the country and they have a fraction of our heart attack rate and they have only 40% of our cancer rate.”

    Vegetarians tend to have lower body mass, cholesterol, blood pressure, heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, renal disease, osteoporosis, dementias such as Alzheimer’s Disease, lower levels of depression and other disorders.

    The Adventist Health Study of the life expectancy in Seventh-day Adventists had favorable indication for vegetarianism. The researchers found that a combination of different lifestyle choices could influence life expectancy by as much as 10 years.

    When analyzing 8,300 deaths in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany among 76,000 men and women in five different, large studies, researchers concluded that vegetarians have a 24 percent reduction in death from heart disease.

    Similarly, in the famous Oxford Vegetarian Study, where 6,000 vegetarians were compared with 5,000 meat-eaters over nearly two decades, scientists found that the rate of death from heart disease was 28 percent lower in vegetarians than in meat-eaters.

    Again the Oxford Vegetarian Study found cancer mortality to be 39 percent lower among vegetarians when compared with meat-eaters. The European Prospective Investigation of Cancer found vegetarians suffer 40 percent fewer cancers than the general population.

And it seems lately that more and more of the real truth comes out about things that we thought were carved in cement now are exposed as false. It is all a bit ironic and a little bit funny except for those who were harmed by the lies. Paul
