US Senate passes the Patriot Act for Food, S510, by a vote of 73 to 25

Dec. 3, 2010 UPDATE: S.510 contains “unconstitutional” provision, goes back to the Senate.

By Rady Ananda

Today, the US Senate passed the Patriot Act for Food, S510, by a vote of 73 to 25.  We can expect to watch the raids on natural foods increase, and we can expect continued malicious prosecution of growers, like the 2-acre gardener in Georgia.

We can also expect private food arrangements to go underground, so as to opt out of the increased rules and regulations we can expect from the FDA.

“Hope has two beautiful daughters: Courage and Anger. Anger at the way things are and courage to make them the way they ought to be.” ~Augustine of Hippo

“The idea that life can ever be without risk is an invitation to self-selected enslavement.” ~Claudia Woodward-Rice

Grow your own, buy local, decentralize the food system.

UPDATE (1:30 pm ET): The only amendment to the Food Safety Modernization Act allowed was the Tester Amendment which exempts small operations (earning under $500,000 a year) from having to file a food safety plan.  All four amendments considered yesterday and today failed, including Sen. Tom Coburn’s amendment to streamline the bureaucratic process. Even the New York Times admits:

“But neither version [House bill HR 2749 and Senate bill S. 510] would consolidate overlapping functions at the Department of Agriculture and nearly a dozen other federal agencies that oversee various aspects of food safety, making coordination among the agencies a continuing challenge.”

Congress must now pass a final form of HR 2749 and S 510, which President Obama is expected to sign into law.

  1. Well…at least we are going to get practice and have time to set up a black market before the total fit of splattering shidlings.

It is like these idiots in DC are begging for rupture; taunting a population that they KNOW is full a crazy MFs capable of ANYTHING.

    So Be It.

  2. Next comes the Food Gestapo, seizing and destroying perfectly good foods, in the same sinful manner that they seize and destroy the Sacred Herb. They are out to seize and destroy all of anything and everything.
It is nothing short of demonic.

Exorcism is the only answer–the demons must be cast out.

    • under tyranny, honest folk become criminals

and we shall see that when it comes to food — because there’s a large majority of people around the world who believe, correctly, that they have the right to feed themselves whatever they want

  3. We’re going to fix those reptiles, that’s what we’re gonna do, we’re gonna fix those reptiles. Rise and shine all you beautiful humans… rise up and resume you place in the sun.

Peace, love, truth and mercy… and joy… too much joy always. Godspeed.

  7. Very disappointing to say the least. I did my best to rally others or even just make them aware so they could sign the petition but no responses. I am not happy about this at all and this will definitely be clear to our corrupt officials come the next elections.

  9. We can hope it gets tied up in committee until the 112th congress gets in and they set it aside because it’s the Democrats bill. No offense (which means I will be offending some people) but I really have no faith in the Republicans, tea-party or otherwise. They will make one or two meaningless changes and then say it’s their food safety bill and pass it. But maybe, just maybe the Republican House and the Democratic Senate will be at such odds with each other that for the next two years they will do absolutely nothing. I know it’s just wishful thinking, but if you’re going to dream, dream big.

    • Pappy… with no due respect, I mean with all disrespect… the left right paradigm is the illusion of choice… like Coke/Pespi. Except for some empty headed rhetoric, they are both poisoning you… they are the same thing.

Not only that, the left/right paradigm is a thing that pretty much the entire nation has already figured out. The republicans and democrats are like a bunch of necrophiliacs lying in bed… all of them wishing we were all dead.

    • I hope you’re right, Mike ~ but the NYTimes said that the House Dems promised to pass S 510 if the debate gets tied up. they have every intention of passing this food control bill this year.

And, while we all understand that the left-right paradigm keeps the masses divided, some key ideological differences do exist.

      • Today AP has a story that the GOP is going to block all Senate legislation that does not have to do with taxes or government spending. So there is some hope, although it seems they’re showing up a little late to the dance.

It frightens me to think what kind of ideology could vote for such a convoluted bill as this.

        • The ideology (and strategy) is neoliberalism, which means the fraudulent trappings of democracy, with some more or less socially progressive policy, all of which is really a front for the graually imposed totalitarianism of corporations and monopolization of all socially created wealth in the hands of a few.

Sheldon Wolin called it “inverted totalitarianism”.

Republicans and Democrats, the MSM, academia, and in general all establishment cadres adhere to this ideology.

  10. Its my choice to eat healthy ORGANIC food and they’ll have to kill me.I will meet my maker before I will allow them to tell me I cant grow my own food.

  11. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I’d personally also like to mention that video games have been at any time evolving. Today’s technology and innovative developments have made it simpler to create genuine and fun games. These kinds of entertainment games were not that sensible when the concept was first of all being tried. Just like other forms of technology, video games also have had to advance via many ages. This itself is testimony towards fast growth of video games.
