Regulators knew Roundup causes birth defects: Lied to public

UPDATE: Monsanto responds to glyphosate-birth defects report: Earth Open Source replies

By Earth Open Source

Industry and EU regulators knew as long ago as the 1980s-1990s that Roundup, the world’s best selling herbicide, causes birth defects – but they failed to inform the public. This is the conclusion of a new report, “Roundup and birth defects: Is the public being kept in the dark?” co-authored by a group of international scientists and researchers and released yesterday.[1]

The report reveals that industry’s own studies (including one commissioned by Monsanto) showed as long ago as the 1980s that Roundup’s active ingredient glyphosate causes birth defects in laboratory animals.

The German government has known about these findings since at least the 1990s, when as the “rapporteur” member state for glyphosate, it reviewed industry’s studies for the EU approval of the herbicide. The European Commission has known since at least 2002, when it signed off on glyphosate’s approval.

But this information was not made public. On the contrary, regulators have consistently misled the public about glyphosate’s safety. As recently as last year, the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, BVL, told the Commission there was “no evidence of teratogenicity” (ability to cause birth defects) for glyphosate.

BVL made this comment in its rebuttal[2] of an independent scientific study published last year by Argentine scientists. The study showed that Roundup and glyphosate cause birth defects in frogs and chickens at concentrations much lower than those used in agricultural spraying.[3] The study was prompted by reports of high rates of birth defects and cancers in areas of South America growing genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready soy, which is engineered to tolerate being sprayed liberally with glyphosate herbicide.

In its rebuttal of the Argentine study, BVL cited as proof of glyphosate’s safety the industry studies submitted for the Commission’s 2002 approval of glyphosate (the approval that is currently in force).

But the authors of the new report obtained the approval documents and found that contrary to BVL’s claim, industry’s own studies, conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, showed that glyphosate/Roundup causes birth defects in experimental animals. In some cases, these effects occurred at low doses.

  1. Unbelievable!
Just can’t get my head around this.

When I read such horror stories as this re the dangers of herbicides and pesticides, I think of that marvelous woman Rachel Carson and her book Silent Spring. When will we ever learn? For a while I wondered about her title which of course was her warning to us and the world that our chemicals were killing the birds who no longer sang in the springtime because they were dead from the spray DDT. Yes, it was finally banned, but now equally dangerous chemicals are being manufactured which in this case case caused the birth of a no-arm child. How do these people sleep at night? Surely they must be aware of the dangers to our children and probably the birds as well and to all of us..

  5. Of course Monsanto will deny the findings of this report, as it has and will continue to deny it was responsible for Agent Orange. The director of Monsanto’s office in Ho Chi Minh City made the feeble excuse that he would be out of the city when I would arrive.

I said I would take him to the Peace Village at Tu Du Hospital where he would see the abnormal births in jars and the living youngsters in the small wards being cared for by devoted nursing staff and doctors.

The director and the director of Dow Chemicals, also in Ho Chi Minh City, gave me the same excude. They were told by the US Govt to make Agent Orange. The same excuse used by the Nazi’s at Nuremberg.

What is needed is an international embargo on all the products of Monsanto, let us hit them where it hurts, In Their Pockets.

  6. That photo of the limbless infant should be plastered on all Roundup containers with the fact that such bird defects occur more frequently in areas of high Roundup use, adding something about neighbors’ children and their own children and grandchildren. That might make people think about it.

  7. Monsanto has the farm industry by the shirttails…. The farmer needs the save first heritage seed and start fresh. Keep the food in the U.S.A. and learn whole holistic time honored methods of growing food. Yes, there will be weeds to contend with and the food will take longer to grow and it will have to better cared for. There will be problem with harvests in some places, but we need to learn to live in balance. It time GMO can be phased out.
