Hungary destroys all GMO maize fields

Some 400 hectares of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said.

The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added. Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary.

Authorities have been checking for GMO crops since the beginning of this year as a new regulation came in force this March which stipulates GMO checks before seeds are introduced to the market.

The checks will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.

Compensation unlikely

Controllers have found Pioneer and Monsanto products among the seeds planted. The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said.

  1. I may just have to move to Hungary! What a beautiful sight that had to be! Way to go Hungary. Keeping it real for the bees and the plants and the humans! Thank you for making my heart sing! There are governments that actually care. America, take note, Hungary will survive as we die.

  2. Very pleased to read this news, and congratulations to the Minister Lajos Bognar for his action. Pity that other countries continue to allow GM to be planted.
It is time they woke up to the fact that people do not want GM in their food.

  3. Viva Hungaria!

Bravo! Nice to hear such news

  4. Our Gov’t in the US will never abide this type of action. Not even when an appeals court Judge ORDERS the crop destroyed (as happened in the beet crop case). No, the USDA issues waivers and they cry ‘foul’ because in 3 short years having corrupted the supply of conventional seed on purpose they are whining that there will be a ‘sugar shortage’.

Activists need to take matters into their own hands. FIND the fields these crops are planted in and destroy them yourself if you are so moved or at least pass that info (crop locations) on to others who are willing.

“The task of an activist is not to navigate around systems of oppression with as much personal integrity as possible. It’s to bring those systems down.” -Lierre Keith

  5. Death to frankenfood. Hooray to Hungary.

meanwhile in Aus…the GM Canola crap isnt selling:-)
and the premium for NON GMO Canola is up to 50$ a tonne more.
hooray, we also have a few(too few) smarter growers and buyers.
a call out for submissions on GM Wheat in aus..senator Ludwig the man in charge,
    returns emails UNread.
some chance we have to get any input with actions like that.
greenpeaces slashing was well meant, sadly wheat will regrow if cut early like they did..and it will retiller More heads. damn!
while they didnt want to spray roundup:-) a heavy dose of Boron or copper sulphate would have had better effect.
